(oh, and get free patterns!)
Turns out I LOVE creating patterns. (Maybe even more than sewing?)
But I am a mom of two toddlers, so my sewing time is limited and unpredictable these days.
So I figured I should ask for some help.
Anyway… would you like to help?
Please read this whole page before signing up.
How does Pattern Testing Work?
First, sign up on this page to become a pattern tester.
When new patterns are available for testing, I will send out a CALL FOR TESTERS email. (Make sure to save my email as a contact, or the tester call emails may end up in spam.)
Pattern details, fabric requirements, skill level, timeline, and any other important details will be included.
Apply for whichever patterns you’d like, and skip the ones you don’t!
When applications close, I will send another email to the chosen testers with a link to download the pattern, feedback forms, etc. I’ll also set up a group chat for myself and the testers.
Now the fun part! You choose your fabrics and sew up the test block/quilt!
As you sew, you’ll need to take extra care to follow the instructions as they’re written. (An unfortunate typo or piecing instructions in the wrong order could cause problems for customers down the line, and that’s what we are trying to avoid by having multiple sets of eyes on the pattern before publishing.)
If you notice any mistakes that need to be changed in order to complete the project, please let me know ASAP so that I can fix the issue.
After any major issues (hopefully none, but hey, we’re all human!) are fixed and the sewing is complete, you’ll need to iron and square your work so you can take at least one nice, clear, well-lit picture of the finished piece. (WIP photos are appreciated too, but not required. You also do not need to finish and bind your work for the pictures.)
Lastly, fill out the feedback form and upload your picture.
Once I have taken feedback from all testers and made any adjustments, I’ll put together either a finalized pattern or a second round tester call if necessary.
As a thank you for your feedback and use of your pictures, you’ll also receive a copy of the finalized pattern once it is published. You’ll also receive photo credit each time one of your images is used on my site/shop/socials.
Requirements
Skill Level: All skill levels are encouraged to sign up, but please be honest about your skill level when applying for testing individual patterns. Ideally, I will choose a range of skill levels to test each design so that I can better understand how to label the pattern in my shop.
FPP Experience: As with skill level, I’m looking for a wide variety of experience with FPP. However, please keep in mind that, like most patterns, mine do not include instructions on the actual method of foundation paper piecing. If you’ve never tried FPP before, feel free to put yourself on the list, but I would advise sewing a block or two before applying for individual patterns, as it can take a bit to wrap your head around the fabric placement when first starting out.
Equipment: You’ll, of course, need a sewing machine and your usual quilting notions. You’ll also be responsible for choosing appropriate fabric for the patterns you test. In addition, you’ll need to be able to print a hard copy of the pattern. No special photography equipment is needed. Any smartphone will take high-enough-quality photos if you have decent lighting.
Socials: I would love for you to post your work on whatever social media platform(s) you use, but I don’t require it to be a tester. If you do choose to share, please include a tag (@colorfullykaty and #colorfullykaty on IG) or a link. The more eyes get on my work, the closer I become to being able to create full-time!
Other Important Info
Copyright: As with finished patterns, you may not share any of what you receive as a tester. This includes documents, instructions, hard copies, or photographs of pattern pages.
What if don’t finish in time? Look, things happen. I understand sometimes things come up. As long as you keep me updated as soon as you know you will be behind schedule, I’ll be understanding. However, repeated missed deadlines or poor communication may result in removal from the tester list.
Already subscribed? If you’ve already subscribed to my email list for freebies or new release notifications, no worries! You can still fill out this form. You won’t get duplicates.
Ok, that should be everything! Now fill out the form below, and you’ll be on the list for the very next pattern tester call!
